More about our community

When the pandemic hit, a lot of us were feeling pretty helpless and isolated. We also knew that humans can be powerful problem solvers when they get together and put their minds to work. And that's why COVID Accelerator exists.

COVID Accelerator is for jacks and janes of all trades. It's a space to ask questions, grow an idea, launch a product, or just stay sane! We've made new friends, met collaborators, and some members have launched companies for the first time in their lives! How will you use it?

Our team

Programmer & Project Manager
Tom Monks
Co-founder of Negative
Eri Gentry

Tito and Eri are friends and co-founders who made a pact to work on the world’s biggest problems. Their focus has been on climate change through Negative, a carbon negative consumer brand. When they heard about the COVID crisis, they were working on mobilizing people to take climate action into their own hands.

They quickly pivoted their time and energy to building COVID Accelerator. It’s there they met Tessa, John, and Tom, who quickly became leaders in the accelerator. Tessa teaches and researches social media rhetorics and is a community organizer in San Francisco. John has worked in nearly every area of startups and launched findcovidjobs.com out of COVID Accelerator.  Tom loves automating and organizing projects, and finding ways to use code and software for good.

Uche is a multidisciplinary designer who enjoys leading the design and implementation of responsive, accessible apps and websites. Tara, an interaction designer, designs interactive environments with systems and stories.

Our history

March 5:

Eri and Tito chat with Walter from doc.ai about the mess we’re all in. At the time, Tito was in self-quarantine unable to obtain a COVID-19 test and Walter was running two startups with dozens of engineers that wanted to help out. So, we wondered, how could we activate talented people to tackle this crisis when the centralized approach wasn’t working? (In COVID news: USA crosses over 100 cases of COVID19.)

March 9:

After lots of reading and synthesis, we post our first thoughts about the crisis and what opportunities and gaps seem apparent. People saw it but it certainly didn’t move people to action. We needed more face-to-face time with people to understand what they wanted.

March 10:

We host our first virtual COVID19 hackathon. Participants bring ideas and brainstorm new ones, such as a device that detects coughs and reminds you to wash your hands and an app to get supplies to and from people who have them and need them. What they really wanted? A place to keep the conversation going. A community.

COVID Accelerator sparks into existence, a community and project-based approach to solving problems.
